Course updates

Changelog

Notable updates and corrections to course materials will be recorded here throughout the semester.

Rebuilt Module 08 as asynchronous implementation practice

  • Module 08

Session 16 is now Practice and Studio with no new lecture. Individual Challenge 08 requires all a11yphant challenges by end of day Tuesday, November 3, with all 10 points awarded for completion and evidence submitted through HuskyCT. Styled the Visit a11yphant action link. Added practical accessible-markup resources, noted Quiz 2 at home with no in-person class October 29, and set the Final Project release note to October 29.

Rebuilt Challenge 07 as a live UConn page review

  • Module 07

Students choose one approved public UConn page, explore WAVE and Lighthouse, validate three findings, perform manual checks, verify three AI claims, and cite at least three relevant WCAG criteria. The individual 10-point submission is now one PDF; no remediation implementation is required. Session teaching samples remain available.

Added Module 07: The AI Says It’s Accessible. Is It?

  • Module 07

Added independent WAVE and Lighthouse evaluation activities, AI claim verification, two working course samples, Field Guide references, and the individual 10-point Prove It challenge. Sessions 14–15 support presentation mode and View all.

Clarified Session 13 key dates

  • Module 06

Reformatted the Accessibility Studio slide dates into a responsive, screen-reader-friendly list so each date and its associated course event are easy to scan.

Updated Session 13 to introduce the Accessibility Studio format

  • Module 06

Revised the closing slide with the October 20 studio transition, asynchronous learning and weekly challenge expectations, class participation and instructor support, Monday HuskyCT announcements, key dates, Quiz 3, and continuing practical accessibility priorities.

Rebuilt the Session 13 cognitive-load demonstration

  • Module 06

Replaced the disconnected cognition exercises with one keyboard-accessible camera-reservation task completed in high- and reduced-cognitive-load versions. Added an instructor-ready comparison and precise WCAG 2.2 applicability notes; Session 13 now invites students into the experience before explaining its design choices.

Revised Session 13 to restore cognitive accessibility instruction

  • Module 06

Removed the minute-by-minute agenda and formal presentations. Restored a focused cognitive-load lesson with verified WCAG 2.2 connections, a concrete interface comparison, informal Challenge 06 instructor check-ins, and the Quiz 3 announcement. Challenge 06 requirements, deliverables, rubric, and submission workflow remain unchanged.

Made Challenge 06 cumulative

  • Module 06

Challenge 06 now asks teams to investigate 12 deliberate issues, retaining the Module 06 emphasis while applying prior accessibility skills and the Module 01 evidence framework. Updated the brief and submission copy; the 10-point team rubric and redesign requirements remain intact.

Rebuilt GearShare as an equipment-loan service

  • Module 06

Rebuilt GearShare as a more realistic equipment-loan experience. Challenge 06 now investigates realistic design decisions tied to motion, timing, predictability, cognitive accessibility, and consistency; its team structure and 10-point rubric remain intact.

Added presentation mode to Sessions 12 and 13

  • Module 06

Sessions 12 and 13 now include presentation mode for in-class teaching while retaining the complete full-page View all mode for review.

Rebuilt the Session 12 Motion and Timing demonstrations

  • Module 06

Replaced the demonstrations with equipment-desk announcements, a camera reservation with adjustable timing, static flash-frequency diagrams, and standard versus reduced-motion kit details.

Developed Module 06: Why Is This So Hard to Use?

  • Module 06

Added Sessions 12 and 13 around motion, timing, safety, cognitive accessibility, and predictability. Expanded the Field Guide and resources, and created Challenge 06 as a 10-point team classification and redesign challenge.

Expanded MakerMap for a comprehensive Challenge 05 review

  • Module 05

Expanded MakerMap for an individual review that requires identifying all deliberate accessibility issues. Strengthened media, form, and semantic coverage; Challenge 05 is worth 10 points.

Session 11 now provides guided screen-reader practice and a concrete Challenge 05 review handoff

  • Module 05

Session 11 now gives students a hands-on screen-reader setup and guided practice across the same Structure, Controls, and Form demo pages from Session 10, then moves directly into the Challenge 05 review with explicit screen-reader observations and evidence gathering.

Redesigned the Session 09 Gesture Required demo and clarified the Pointer Gestures lesson

  • Module 04

Updated the Session 09 Precision Gauntlet to replace the nonfunctional abstract path-tracing exercise with a realistic swipe-to-confirm example. The new Gesture Required demo requires a directional pointer gesture to complete a reservation flow, while the comparison control shows the same successful outcome with a simple button and no directional gesture requirement. This change more clearly illustrates WCAG 2.5.1 Pointer Gestures and distinguishes path-based pointer gestures from the neighboring Drag It example that demonstrates dragging and alternative input methods.

Updated Challenge 03 for Quiz 1 study guide

  • Module 03

Updated Challenge 03 to create a cumulative Quiz 1 study guide covering Modules 01–03, with new cross-module team assignments, evidence requirements, and workshop sessions.

Updated Module 02 session count

  • Module 02

Updated Module 02 to reflect the addition of Session 04.

Added Module 02 and WAVE evaluation resources

  • Module 02

Added Module 02, **Can You See What Matters?**, including Sessions 03-04 and Challenge 02. Added WAVE and visual-accessibility testing resources for investigating color, contrast, text enlargement, reflow, and other visual cues.

Updated Module 01 legal resources and clarified Section 508 scope

  • Module 01

Updated Module 01 legal resources to provide clearer authoritative guidance on Section 504, Section 508, and ADA Title II. Replaced the previous Section 504 placeholder resource with U.S. Department of Education guidance on technology accessibility, added postsecondary-specific federal guidance, and clarified that Section 508 directly applies to federal-agency ICT while remaining relevant to UConn through institutional accessibility policy and procedures.
