Broader Practice

Accessibility Testing Workflow

A durable workflow for investigating accessibility that synthesizes the course without turning testing into a checklist fetish.

Overview

This workflow helps students move from first impressions to evidence-based investigation. The point is not to memorize a sequence. The point is to know which kinds of evidence help answer which question about the interface.

Why It Matters

Different tools reveal different parts of an interface. A single tool cannot answer the question β€œIs this accessible?” across all user needs and contexts.

Course Sequence

  • Understand the task.
  • Test normal use.
  • Test keyboard operation.
  • Check visual presentation and contrast.
  • Evaluate meaningful media.
  • Inspect semantic structure.
  • Test with a screen reader.
  • Trigger errors and state changes.
  • Use automated tools as supporting evidence.
  • Verify findings against authoritative guidance.
